Is this possible or a fantasy?
>ancient ThinkPad
>repurposed as NAS
>idle 99% of the time
>fan runs even on idle, don't like that
>(yes I've tried everything, SpeedFan/ThinkFan/TPFanControl/Fan Control have never ever worked for me, also nothing in BIOS)
>disconnect fan
>but now reaches maximum temp on extended operations: max CPU temp is 85, LibreHardwareMonitor shows it maxing out at 81
>that's ok, at least it throttles instead of going further and then shutting down I suppose
>but I don't want it to get even that high for very long
So I had an idea
>make a small hole in underside of laptop
>instead of plugging the fan into the motherboard, thread the fan cable through the hole
>connect to some kinda adapter gadget thing that provides a USB male plug (does something like this even exist? is picrel it?)
>plug that into a basic USB port
>therefore I have the fan running on-demand (by plugging it into a USB port) but at no other times
Crazy idea? Dangerous, even? Or feasible?
