/tpg/ - ThinkPad General
Last thread:
>>105752683

Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series (excluding T440p and T480, those suck) if you want the Real Business Experienceโ„ข
>Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook)

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards, tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: magnesium roll cage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>Excellent Linux & *BSD support
>Trackpoint (why the fuck wasn't this in the general before? that's the only reason to get a thinkpad in 2025 honestly)

I have a shitty old IdeaPad with a 35wh battery that's worn out. I opened it up and there's an empty 2.5" caddy, and apparently Lenovo also made a 45wh battery for some related models of the laptop. Could I upgrade the battery from 35wh to 45wh with a new cell, even though the voltage is different? The upgraded battery version is 11 volts, while my current one is 7.5. Same connector though, and the screws line up. Haven't ordered it yet though.

hey fellas. I upgraded my t440p to have a LP140WF3-SPD1 screen. The third one on the chart from this site: https://seiba.gitlab.io/thinkpad-t440p-upgrade-guide/#display.

Now, here's my dilemma: The screen keeps getting what I can only assume is heat damage. In so many words, a random purple spot always ends up showing up anywhere from 2-4 months after usage ("coincidentally" always after the free warranty gets used up). I want a screen that's HD, but DOESN'T fucking shit out. Any advice on what to do/where to look? I'm an idiot, so I didn't pack my ORIGINAL screen when i moved, either. Honestly might consider getting one of those, depending on the price. UHD is fuckin sweet and all, but if I can only use it for 2-4 months whats the fuckin point?

It's getting harder and harder to keep these things usable. I love thinkpads. I'm not one of those brand-loyal retards who loves products just for being products, but damn man, there's just something about them Newer laptops are better sure, but not in the price range. Theyre not perfect, but theyre reliable, cheap, and do the job. In order to get something better these days you'd need to pay fuckin 4 times the price. That's not even accounting for other benefits like linux compatibility, ease of servicing, computer lifetime, replacability, etc. Maybe it's my fault for trying to upgrade it or whatever. It's like the only viable options these days are a $2000 hyper rig that can calculate a solution to the rieman paradox, or a fuckin chromebook. Is it so wrong to want to be able to buy a middle of the road pc? God damnit, man. Why can't companies just make good products anymore? I know its all about money etc etc but fuck me dude, can't ONE company make a half-decent laptop below the 800 fucking dollar range?

In that case you might need something newer. Haswell (2013-2014) mobile i7s are about as powerful as today's N100. The first Thinkpad models that would be a noticeable upgrade are T470p/T480(s) with the best available CPU (and in the case of T480 non-s, dual heatsink mod). If you have the money, something even newer like T14 G1 AMD or P1 G2 might make sense for future-proofing.

I have a T480 with a non-functioning trackpad and trackpoint (but the keyboard still works) following recent water damage (from condensation). If it was just the keyboard or just the trackpad, I'd be happy to replace it and go on with my day, but the fact that it's the trackpad and trackpoint is making me fear it's a board-related issue. Any suggestions on how I should troubleshoot this? This machine has Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. For now, my default plan is to leave the laptop powered off for a while to see if it resolves itself.

On startup I've also noticed a new message: "Disabled IRQ #16"

Question to those who may know; what is the best cpu you can reasonably put in an elitebook 2560p?

I'm looking to get an ultra cheap portable laptop to toss in a bag and not care about, and this looks perfect. With a socketed cpu, what would my options in terms of a cpu that wouldn't make it burn alive or make the bios have a stroke?
I was thinking about getting an x220/x230, but you can't upgrade the cpu on them + no DVD drive.

I have a T410 running mint with the mini dock series 3. Is there a way to make this thing output to two displays via the dock?
In connecting one one display, it extends the desktop just fine, but in plugging in the 2nd display, they both get no signal and the display manager on mint shows them as all being mirrored displays of the main laptop display.
Also on a side note, Brave and the trackpoint on this thing seem to run at what looks like 30hz/30fps. Any sort of trickery to make it run on a proper framerate? Other programs run at the native refresh rate, but most web browsers don't and the trackpoint seems kinda choppy.

hit up the thinkwiki if you're looking at newer models to see if things like ram are upgradable, if not, just get the spec that best fits what you want. dell latitiudes and HP elitebooks are good alternatives that often go for lower prices for the spec as well while still being cromulent devices.

These seem to sell with garbage TN 1366x768 screens more often than T series. Buy only IPS FHD if you care for your eyes.

Personally I'd buy only gen 2 or later. Gen 1 has good performance but shit battery life in the AMD version, and no meaningful improvement over 2018 models in the Intel version.

If you need to use two drives, your only options are gen 1 and 2 Intel, where only some units have a motherboard that takes one 2.5 inch and one M.2 drive (the only sure way to know is a pic of the insides). AMD versions and everything after gen 2 take only one drive.

>ancient ThinkPad
>repurposed as NAS
>idle 99% of the time
>fan runs even on idle, don't like that
>(yes I've tried everything, SpeedFan/ThinkFan/TPFanControl/Fan Control have never ever worked for me, also nothing in BIOS)
>disconnect fan
>but now reaches maximum temp on extended operations: max CPU temp is 85, LibreHardwareMonitor shows it maxing out at 81
>that's ok, at least it throttles instead of going further and then shutting down I suppose
>but I don't want it to get even that high for very long
So I had an idea
>make a small hole in underside of laptop
>instead of plugging the fan into the motherboard, thread the fan cable through the hole
>connect to some kinda adapter gadget thing that provides a USB male plug (does something like this even exist? is picrel it?)
>plug that into a basic USB port
>therefore I have the fan running on-demand (by plugging it into a USB port) but at no other times
Crazy idea? Dangerous, even? Or feasible?

It's made from the cheapest plastic you could find. Not carbon reinforced like the T series. So it is considerably thicker yet still feels like it'll just break when you look funny at it. The plastic is also not coated at all which might be a boon if you hate soft-touch, but scratches will go right into the structure, well, it is CHEAP plastic.
The trackpad is shit and the only saving grace for mouse inputs is the nipple-
The keyboard is the worst, virtually no travel, feels like the paper which wraps single-use razor blades, the keys are made from cheap plastic which will polish in no time. Even macbook keyboards are better, and those are seriously shit.

Get an E-Series or a little older T-Series instead. Lenovo says in their own material that the L is above the E, but I'm seriously convinced that some fucktard intern mixed those two up because E-Series feel like aluminum cladded T-Series. L-Series take the L, literally. Do not buy, they're absolutely shit.

can i get a thinkpad for my bday tomorrow? ive been using the same lenovo g50 laptop from since i was 12 and i cant do anything i used to do in it anoymore, can barely run windows 10, performance is just as bad on linux somehow with the hassle that i cant get davinci or premier to run properly

sure it can browse the web and play movies and run roblox for my sister, but i want to do more stuff personally for myself like modeling on blender, recording games without lagging and faster video editing without constant crashes, and some light gaming like playing ultrakill and minecraft at 60 fps at least

that would be greatly appreciated to be honest, cuz at this point any cheap laptop made since the pandemic would be better than what i have rn but id love to have my own peronal laptop and leave the old one for the rest of my family, and id love for it to be a thinkpad cuz it would probably allow me to tinker with it more than the old one with better documentation and support

I'd say AMD T14 G3/4 is enough for modern titles on highest settings in FHD.
But any thin laptop is much worse cooling-wise than an eGPU.
So either get a P15/17, if you don't mind the off-center keyboard or a nice and compact intel T14/X13 with an ebay GPU and dock.

you know many thinkpads have paint covered magnesium that feels like plastic? and magnesium is very light, not very cold to the touch, and flexible. It feels not great, but you learn to love it bending and springing back instead denting or bending and staying bent.
My S1 yoga had people all the time saying they were plastic or that they used them and were all plastic, but in actually owning one, the entire chassis other than the thin bezel around the screen is magnesium. Lid, body, bottom cover, palm rest, etc, all magnesium.

The light next to the power button is on, so it's running, and when I close the screen the red LED on the ThinkPad logo stays lit, instead of going to slow flash (sleep).

yeah it's probably a scam. the neckbeards that made coreboot probably just cobbled it together so that it simply works. they probably didn't do the kind of engineering and testing that the IBM/Lenovo guys did. they also most likely lack a detailed understanding of the hardware involved. so running coreboot on the machine for a long time might start to damage the hardware. i am talking out of my ass but i think the principle stands.
never trust neckbeards. they are the bastards that take apart thinkpads with the wrong screwdriver, break plastic tabs, install chinese ram, and then reassemble the whole thing incorrectly so that there are gaps and improperly seated parts.

you think you guys have it bad? try sourcing good batteries for a T60.
you cannot just recell these things either because they have some shithead circuitboard in them that needs to be reprogrammed or something. i wish someone would come up with a good solution to this bullshit ass problem.
