i agree that this is a serious problem

i just read the UK petition wording. i hate to say it, but it doesn't address the underlying issue of digital rights laws being draconian. suppose the petition goes through and starts a discussion on remote kill features, and these are effectively outlawed. then suppose a company no longer wants to support a product. they can't kill it to lock consumers out, but they can still rely on how digital rights laws are written to prevent people from reverse engineering there systems and publishing their findings. if a program is written to go through a server, and the server is made unavailable, the client hasn't been killed, but is still useless, and developing and distributing a server is tantamount to breaking digital rights laws.
