Is your idea of "improving" the characters stripping them of traits they've had for decades? If so people are right to be hostile towards you. If only more people bullied Evan and Ian back when they were still fans instead of meddling with the official canon. In peoples' perspective you are advocating for taking away the traits people love, not adding to or developing them.
