Furinkan notes that: "The mushroom eaters are called "Kuikuidake" (クエクエ茸) which translates as "Kuikui Mushrooms". Their faces resemble haniwa ceramic sculptures." It seems VIZ translated "kui" as "eat".
I'm not really sure what クエ was intended to be, but I assume it is a sound effect for eating based on what VIZ did, but I have no clue. The sound effect in the background that VIZ translated as eat was also this, though written in hiragana so "くえ~".
