Why are writers so allergic to killing main cast? Everybody-dies endings are not solely a Tomino thing - was there much uproar at Basilisk's finale? Doubt it.

I don't mourn the pedo count. It's Saazbaum who got killed for no reason, because incorporating him into the story further exceeded the writer's intellectual capacity.
