There's some obvious inspirations for this scene:

1. Star Wars and Luke Skywalker. Luke was prepping to join as a pilot for the Empire at the start of the film, but never did. This is a "What if Luke joined the empire" kind of scenario.

Star Wars is a male-male-female combo as well which links with the Cloud-Tifa-Barret. I noticed Square was at its peak when it was aping Star Wars.
