Not to be a total history sperg, but Feudalism (or rather European feudalism) was an economic system that was in place for hundreds of years and changed during that time (look at the United States and how much it has changed since the 1700's). There were variations on this system, namely bastard feudalism and absolutism, who while still using the feudal economic system of lords being overdressed property managers, said property managers had vastly different amounts of power.
In absolutism, lords had almost no military power, namely because so much of the military and to a lesser extent the civilian bureaucracy were now under the influence of the King and his court rather than the local government. The Battletech example of this would probably be the Lyran Commonwealth, where the Archon's authority and control is pretty much absolute, and the only way nobles seem to really influence policy is by throwing money and influence around in the right circles. The Archon has only ever been deposed once (so far as I am aware) and it was only after universal contempt from all strata of society and with his own niece leading the coup. The Liao are also closest to this system, due to their insane control on the bureaucracy, but the Capellan state is such a jumble of centralized bureaucracy and feudal privileges that it's hard to use the label of Feudalism at all.
On the other end, there is bastard feudalism which has lords with such authority that they can actually lean on the king and pressure him to doing things he might not want to do. Classic example is the Free Worlds League, where both parliament and the constituent member states are able to put pressure on the Captain General and force him to do what they want, in some scenarios. While they aren't full War of the Roses levels of civil war and vassals controlling kings, smart Captain Generals have to mind their vassals a lot more closely than other powers.
