The rose is more significant, more impactful, more meaningful, and beautiful (in a disturbed yet artistic way).
It’s so annoying that people went so far in order to compel Toby Fox because they felt uncomfortable. This pisses me off so badly… Of course the rose implies SA, and that was a conscious artistic choice—not an endorsement of SA, nor an attempt to trigger as many people as possible.
It’s so frustrating that video games are treated like this, as opposed to film or literature, which can tackle such topics and, guess what, help people deal with trauma.
Look how many books, films, TV series, etc. verse about Evil. The depiction of Evil in fiction is in no way something new, nor is it an exception. On the contrary, you will see more media centering around evil doers than heroic figures. One great example is Hannibal Lecter: he is the antagonistic force, yet he is the main character. His evil only works because it has multiple layers, it’s credible, and IT IS A MENACE TO ALL! If you, as a viewer, were not disturbed by him in any way, the heroine would not shine as greatly.
The same is true for DR: the actions of a good player versus what you do as a weird route player only amplify the good inside Kris (since they tried so hard to revert your actions).
Anyway, that’s my 5 cents about it.
As much as people whined about the simple implication of SA—to the point in which Toby decided to remove it from the game—I think his vision remains intact. And YES, this all still is meant to represent (as ambiguous as it is) SA.
