what really happened is the government incentivized/forced banks to make all of those loans, forced all the investors it wanted to get rid of to buy the loans, and blew the whole thing up to destroy the middle class.
The main point is that the government was, and still is, giving free houses to niggers and spics and other racial trash and even with all the free money they gave them to pay their mortgages they still fucked it up.
