The important thing is that a skilled animator can depict 3D space well simply with key animation, not necessarily relying on multiplane cameras. Even if you were to point out the flaw of flat backgrounds, I could direct you to some Disney movies which repainted them for every frame, so the claim that 3D's range of expression is greater is technically false, and for those who can't break free of the limitations, the limitations prevent them from attempting something they can't actually accomplish, so it's practically false as well.
