Yes, that was a headcanon I came up with because I used to believe what happens with a soul changes based on whether or not you died of a natural death (Since dying a natural death prevents you from being resurrected by the dragon balls), but nothing supports this.
I think only Shin Budokai Another Road tried to come up with an explanation right? Something about Future Goku being in a state of perpetual nightmares, but how or why that happened isn't explained, or why nobody else could help him out since you can free him by simply beating him up, so it was a silly excuse with no real thought put into it.
