The Sherman was objectively mostly decent, particularly after the wet ammo storage upgrade, which made crew survivability above average. It was also widely available and easy to keep running, so American soldiers could very often count on some working tanks coming to give them heavy support.
Didn't maybe have the biggest and meanest gun necessary fight a German Tiger or anything, but the Americans fought like, one or two Tigers in the entire war (one which was stuck on a rail car). American tank crew were paranoid about running into one, but fortunately for them they virtually never ever did.
