As I recall, that was always the yin-yang dynamic between the two of them. Ken was blessed with considerable natural ability, but was arrogant and easily distracted. Ryu wasn't a particularly talented fighter, but was fully autistic about his training to the point where he excludes almost everything else life has to offer. Both of them flawed in their own ways and complement each other, like two sides of the same coin.
