>Asuka is absolutely the least comforting presence he has had out of the whole cast unless we're counting Gendo
Shinji seeks Asuka at the start of EoE because at this point in time she's what he considers the most comforting presence. This is spelled out loud by Shinji himself. And yes, Shinji has the shittiest, most worthless dynamic with Asuka out of the entire cast.

>It's meant to show that in the end he would rather choose pain than loneliness
The epilogue of EoE is LITERALLY about showing Shinji picking loneliness over pain.

>On the other extreme is Kaworu: pure comfort with no effort involved, affection that requires no sacrifices
Shinji understands Kaworu's sacrifices and his own shortcomings, that's why he lets go of him in 3+1. But it certainly doesn't change the fact he is Shinji's most important person and his soulmate within the narrative of eva, this is a fact. But Asuka doesn't stand on the opposite side as anything positive, Asuka stands as something purely negative (which is why Shinji simply goes for the throat when she won't be what he needs her to be or why he doesn't have any handshake agreement nor any form of physical contact with her in 3+1). You do not point at Kaworu being too good for Shinji when Asuka is nothing but a dumpster fire for him. If you really want to pick solid and balanced dynamics for Shinji, Rei is by far the prime candidate, both her and Shinji support each other in a loop of mutual positive feedback. Misato is second, she doesn't profit from Shinji's positive influence as much as Rei but they definitely improve (mostly Shinji) being together. Shinji and Asuka is the opposite, putting them together only makes them worse, and Misato bringing Asuka in is the main reason Shinji and herself never managed to heal like they should (and also why Kaworu had a shot at becoming such a huge deal to Shinji).
