I recently picked up an Iver Johnson TP-22 as happy medium between the two. It's a double-action pistol with a manual safety. Seven rounds of .22lr isn't much, but pistols like these are designed to be used within spitting distance. The TP-22 is made of zamak, but reports on boomer forums indicate that with the right ammo (typically CCI MiniMags) they are reliable and accurate. At one point NJ police were issued them as backup guns.
