A common theme of fools across cultures, including holy fools, and of trickster spirits and gods, like Loki, and court jesters, etc., is the wisdom that they bring with their critique. While the gender norms that they sometimes critique are rigid, I wonder whether the (broad?) recognition of fools’/tricksters’ critique of gender reflects a latent recognition, across cultures, of the arbitrariness of gender norms?
