I have the idea of using something like shogi where characters are simbolized by pieces, and they have a relationship table to other characters.

The key to me, would be to generate every action between the pieces, a combo of events that look up something like an I ching manual.

So something like pawn cross the river could trigger something like a sudden burst of rage because he's from the rival family of like the tower of the other player.

But this pawn is the son of like the bishop, so the evil tower entering in a burst of rage to kill him, would cause an event that you can look up on the manual, like bishop reacts to his kid being killed, then he will begin reading books to kill the tower.

Clearly using a system like I ching to output the story events would make for a perfect VN procedural story.
