Of course is you buddy. I think any discussion about board design, length, tail shape is more about OPTIMIZATION. So optimizing your board according to your scopes, limitations and ocean conditions is more like a fine tunig... with the exception of extreme cases, sure.
Once you're good enough you should be able to do basic maneuvers with pretty much anything that floats... so get good.
