The combo locations that Yum! Brands had were ahead of their time. I believe the future of casual and fast food restaurants will be half a dozen brands all in one location, with automation running 90% of the work and most orders going to delivery services and the drive-thru.
The combo KFC/Taco Bell/Long John Silvers/etc suffered from the company selling off brands and never fully integrating the production process between sides of the house. Automated kitchens, designed with multibrand production in mind, will succeed where Yum! failed.
