Germans used to make the classic "simple but elegant" Eurogames (most games by Knizia, Kramer, and Schacht, plus Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, to some extent Hansa Teutonica, etc.), though this changed somewhat with the rise of Feld and Rosenberg's defection to the side of baroque (charitable view) or overcomplicated (uncharitable view) games. Frenchmen emphasize cool and/or cute themes (Abyss, Takenoko, to some extent Small World, etc), in stark contrast to the typically dull aesthetics of the genre. Italians are concentrated in the baroque/overcomplicated realm (Tzolk'in, Barrage, and many more). I feel the other European peoples don't have enough prominent designers for me to categorize their contributions. And of course there are all mere tendencies, not universals.
