I fucking LOVE Paul Verhoeven as a director, but Starship Troopers, while entertaining, was not his best movie, his intent as a director is at odds with the source material as well as the actual execution of the film.
I really get what he's trying to do, but because he hadn't actually read or understood the source material, he doesn't do a particularly smart job satirizing it.
Are there some fascist elements to the society in Starship Troopers? It can be argued, but it's not the entire story, it's a very different society compared to what Italy and Germany were and were hoping to be, particularly Germany, as Heinlein makes a big point about the society in the book being decidedly NOT racist.
One of the reveals at the end is that the main character is Hispanic, and the intent with that is to surprise you, that in spite of his racial and cultural heritage, he was ultimately just another man and was treated as such by society.
Robocop and Total Recall are both far smarter films, really two of the best action movies ever made, and which are also much more entertaining (but Starship Troopers is still a fun and enjoyable watch, because he's still got his personal touches).
