one has to be careful with this.
for example Star Alliance tops up at Gold status, which you can attain pretty easily but it gives you access only to the lower-level lounges which at many airports have been made available to pretty much everybody and their dog. this is really fucking annoying because e.g. with United you can only get into United Club and not the actually good Polaris lounges
on the other hand Oneworld has a fancier, Emerald status that gives you access to the higher-level lounges including first class lounges. I think that is really fucking good and those lounges are usually good quality. when I was flying more for work, I always tried to get the Emerald status and I think that worked better than most credit card lounge access privileges, provided that you stick to Oneworld.
I haven't used SkyTeam much so never got status with them.
