Unironically how the fuck do you play Sonic?

>if I GO FAST I bump into enemies, traps and obstacles after ~3 seconds of running
>if I go slow the game feels like a Mario with much worse controls and doesn't feel like the right way to play
What the fuck am I doing wrong? How do people play this? Why is a game centered around going fast so full of obstacles that get you if you go fast?
