Both have more appealing character designs, especially when it comes to side characters. One piece is very exaggerated, zany and cartoony. While Naruto looks /fa/, grounded and "serious". Making both more palatable to the average reader. Both are based on cool, popular cliches: "pirates" and "ninjas". HxH kinda exists in between of their art styles. A "Hunter" isn't a very precise pop culture term, and they definitely don't seem as cool.
