I just found out that the original sparring for Karate is "Kake-kumite". It's like Wing Chun's chisao, but if Motobu Choki's book is to be believed, it's a fucked up version of it with kicking someone in the balls being a valid move, so is throwing, and you risk getting struck so hard you lose consciousness (which is mental considering the videos and pictures I saw of it target only the body). The bunkai of the katas suddenly make sense when you're stuck in stand up grappling range with your homie. Why isn't this done more? Is it because of the Japanization of Karate, making the kumite more like Kendo?
