Use axe attacks to let you be in sword mode. Use sword attacks to fill the outer yellow gauge. Once the outer yellow gauge is full you'll be exploding phials on every sword attack.
The best way to charge all of your gauges at once is by hitting the big counter wirebug skill since just spamming attacks is too slow.
