Wilds Is Cooked โ Here's Why
1. The Performance Albatross
Wilds was delayed two full years and still runs like itโs gasping for air on many mid-range PCs. Thatโs not a patch problem โ thatโs a systems-level rendering bottleneck. The RE Engine wasn't built for seamless open worlds, and Wilds' implementation of it is clearly duct-taped together.
This problem is not fixable without deeply compromising content fidelity or gutting the entire renderer. At best, performance patches will be marginal. And while console users may tolerate it, the Steam base โ particularly in Asia โ will not. Every day that passes locks in the gameโs reputation as a technical failure.
2. Fundamental Design Misread
Capcom appears to have fundamentally misunderstood why players loved World:
It wasn't because of a sprawling narrative. It wasn't because of voice-acted NPCs.
It was because it felt like a raw, organic hunting ecosystem, where monsters interacted and challenged you. Wilds strips that down to a glorified theme park:
Overly scripted monster behaviors. No friction in exploration or crafting. Focus mode and inflated weapon counters = autopilot combat
And worse โ build diversity is gone, thanks to Artians outclassing everything. The endgame is solved on week one. Streamers quit. Theorycrafters disengage. The loop collapses.
3. PR & Update Strategy Makes It Worse
Capcomโs strategy has been:
Say nothing, Push microtransactions and cosmetics, Dripfeed minor content (Tempered Mizu, Seregios) as though theyโre major events, Delay any major response
The longer they stay silent, the more the narrative ossifies. Right now, Wilds is perceived as bloated, easy, ugly, unfinished, and insultingly shallow. Even if thatโs not 100% true, it doesnโt matter. The damage is already baked into the community psyche.

the small monster roster isn't a problem, they could add 20 new monsters to wilds in the next title update and it still wouldn't fix the problems with a lack of content.

Does tail severing need to be all slash damage? There's a kunai in Rise that I assume deals slash damage, I'm thinking I can just stack blunt damage on the tail then use the kunai for the final hit.

in pre-5th gen you do spend a long time waiting for him to come down, and that wouldn't even be that big of a deal if he didn't spend 90% of the hunt pelting fireballs at you, which also wouldn't be that bad if he he didn't also back up and the fireballs didn't have windboxes, making it so barely dodging the fireball was actually more dangerous than getting hit directly by it.
And no one likes Azurelos because everything that Rathalos does that confirms he's going to land, Azurelos switches it up.

You have these extremely large open maps, which could be explored, but the seikret has an auto-guide feature that takes you right to your destination. You get so many different ways to deal with monsters (offsets, perfect guards, perfect dodges, wound popping, mounting, and so on) and the movesets for your weapons are so fluid that most monsters are pushovers, while the few monsters that arenโt pushovers end up feeling more annoying than hard. It feels like the few โhardโ monsters in wilds just have movesets that are meant to waste your time by keeping you from being able to attack the monster. Now, well obviously, thereโs moves that are meant to make the player back off (such as full body hitboxes), but thereโs a lack of feeling tension with the monsters moves - and thatโs the consequence of making the combat extremely fluid. It honestly feels like the monster hunter series is basically one installment away from having a combat system thatโs almost identical to a combat system like sekiro.
Maybe this is just the me speaking, but I honestly think that what modern monster hunter is missing is jank. I believe that the jank of the old gen games is what gave the combat tension. Because the jank made monsters less predictable, players need to be more aware of whatโs happening around them. For me personally, I believe that needing to be aware of whatโs going on and being cautious is a core part of monster hunter in general. You need to be cautious of whatโs around you, because you are a mere human in a domain of giants. Without needing to be aware and being able to just waltz in, it feels like monster hunter has lost a critical part of it that made monster hunter so satisfying.

Performance has been horrible since launch, and it doesn't look like they care to fix it. But performance issues aside, this game is still not good. It's hard describe why without writing a PhD thesis length article on it. I think it boils down to this contradiction where the world is so big and alive looking, but during gameplay, it is ironically the most pointless and without soul of any MH game. The bird mount I this was the single biggest mistake, making this feel like a cheap "auto play" mobile MMO.
Every single good quality of life improvement is cancelled out by five design choices or game mechanics that cheapen the entire experience. This isn't even a "this game is too easy" rant. It is too easy, but difficulty can always be added. Even if the monsters were made more interesting or more challenging the rest of the world and character building are just so boring that there is no saving this without a complete redesign of core game systems. MH:World had the better world and monsters, and MH:Rise had the better itemization. I thought Wilds was going to be the best of both, but it is inferior across the board.

If you are referring to the fuckhuge Ice explosion that spreads to the sides, I feel like it's almost exclusively a multiplayer risk. Hunted her yesterday in the lumus with people and she definitively spammed it way more there when switching targets so you have to think if it's going to hit you or not because of the clutter and the fact that it's not aiming at you.
Otherwise it's but a simple iframe or nervous wakeup punish.
