The best guess is in that pic, it's probably supposed to represent killing the witch. Not like using an Axe would make sense since they aren't exactly tied to their father as a woodcutter, and flames are already a common motif visually + would overlap when they used the little match girl later.

The one I don't get is Charlotte.

You could maybe say she's the white rabbit or something from Alice in Wonderland, but that doesn't fit with everyone else being the main characters of their fables.
