People keep misunderstanding the actual prime directive of the Soulslike formula, as it was originally. It's not meant to be an action game. It's not meant to be a skill check. It's not meant to be a memory test.
It's Miyazaki's fetish — a ballbusting simulator where you are abused until you learn systems and strategy and start leveraging every advantage the game has on offer. You were never expected to "get good" by learning the timings and mastering the combat, you were expected to "get good" by taking advantage of the variety of weapons and systems to stack the deck in your favor until you effectively cheat your way through blatantly unfair fight. Miyazaki does not care if you want to win every fight by just playing a dude with a straight sword — that's your choice to do so, but it's very clearly a self-imposed challenge run and it's entirely on you to "get good" if you refuse to take advantage of everything the developers prepared for you.
