The difference between liberalism and conservatism is reason. Like conservatives liberals view people as individualistic, driven by needs and desires. But unlike conservatism liberalism views people as possessing a strong sense of reason to keep their drives in check. Hence their belief in limited government and laws/rights enshrining the primacy of the individual. (Let's not muddle up liberalism with socialism/communism and other left wing ideologies)
