Unironically Star Fox Warriors, but made as a mainline entry and not a spin-off thing.
Instead of hack-n-slash with 100s of enemies, think of massive scale fleet battles.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity had an excellent format between missions that's fit Star Fox.
>Your goal in AoC is to contribute to the fight against the Calamity.
>You accomplish this by completing missions and side-quests in different regions of the map.
>Completing missions and killing enemies nets you resources to spend on upgrades.
>Unlock more characters as you play through the game, each with unique playstyles.
Now translate this into Star Fox.
>Contribute to the war effort against Andross's Army.
>Accomplish this by completing missions and side-quests on different planets and areas of the map.
>Completing missions and killing enemies nets you resources to spend on upgrades.
>Unlock more characters as you play through the game, each with their own ships, skill trees, and abilities.
So in execution, it's play like this:
>Main missions all classic Arwing missions, both on-rails and all-range
>Beat the main mission, unlock some side missions for that Area
>Side missions have more variety (Landmaster, on-foot, wing riding, etc.)
>Both main and side missions give resources/currency for upgrades
>Each Area has an ally (Bill, Katt, etc.) you unlock by 100%-ing their Area
>Fully playable in four-player co-op online and splitscreen, plus VS mode
So you'd start off with just Fox, Falco, Peppy, and Slippy.
In-game you can unlock Bill, Katt, Fay, Miyu, and Krystal. Maybe even like James or General Pepper as DLC.
Then in post-game, you can unlock the Star Wolf cast. Kinda like how in Hyrule Warriors you can unlock villians after.
Each pilot would have their own skill trees and special ability. Nothing complex, just something simple like in Starlink.
