I think chara works because, like us the player, he doesn't win in any sense of word. He either stays dead and lets his ambition go, or he helps us grow strong and become a true demon. Asriel may be stuck as flowey, but he knows what love feels like. Chara doesnt, he's from a different world with different rules and different people. He sees the monster kingdom the same way we do, full of interesting characters to love and kill. We're both little human freaks looking into the monster world from the outside.
