I didn't really have that big of a problem with the speed back when I played it, though tbf I played it on max battle speed AND with Wait on (where it pauses the ATB when you enter menus). The battle intros before you could start fighting were slow as FUCK though, you had to think twice before exploring new areas since even entering a battle and just fleeing took forever.
