Interviewer: In this game, Pauline is a small barefoot girl who rides on Donkey Kong’s shoulder the whole time. Why that choice?

Miyamoto: Ah! Well, when I was young, we would carry our cousins like that. Especially when there were puddles. You don’t want their socks to get wet. (laughs)

Everyone: (laughs)

Miyamoto: And Donkey Kong is very big, but he’s not fast. So we thought, if someone small is on him, maybe he feels faster. We tried a backpack, but a backpack doesn’t talk. (laughs)

Interviewer: Why barefoot?

Miyamoto: If you’re on someone’s shoulder, you don’t need shoes. Shoes are for touching the ground. She never touches the ground. So it would be strange. Also, if we gave her shoes, players might think she was going to get off. That would be misleading. (laughs)
