You fucking know how it went
Interviewer: In this game, Pauline is a small barefoot girl who rides on Donkey Kongβs shoulder the whole time. Why that choice?
Miyamoto: Ah! Well, when I was young, we would carry our cousins like that. Especially when there were puddles. You donβt want their socks to get wet. (laughs)
Everyone: (laughs)
Miyamoto: And Donkey Kong is very big, but heβs not fast. So we thought, if someone small is on him, maybe he feels faster. We tried a backpack, but a backpack doesnβt talk. (laughs)
Interviewer: Why barefoot?
Miyamoto: If youβre on someoneβs shoulder, you donβt need shoes. Shoes are for touching the ground. She never touches the ground. So it would be strange. Also, if we gave her shoes, players might think she was going to get off. That would be misleading. (laughs)
Everyone: (laughs)
Interviewer: So sheβs small for gameplay reasons?
Miyamoto: No, no. Sheβs small because then Donkey Kong looks bigger. And if he looks bigger, the world looks smaller. And if the world is smaller, players feel stronger. Thatβs very important.
Interviewer: Did you consider using Mario?
Miyamoto: Mario is always jumping off things. He would never stay on the shoulder. (laughs)
Interviewer: What about when he was a baby carried around by Yoshi ?
Miyamoto: He had no shoes ( LAUGHS HARDER)
