I thought that was more akin to the Royal Horse Guard's with Farrier Axes, it had a spike you could slam into the skull of a dying horse to put it out of its misery, and an axe blade to chop the hoof off (they used the hooves like a dog tag, to count every dead horse in a combat unit of cavalry)
But it could also be a thing among grenadiers or sappers, not a huge napoleonic nerd.
