Arneson really does deserve more credit.

Gygax was bitching about people using the game for storytelling for his whole career even though story games gave us settings like Dragonlance and Lodoss and so many others. If you read his forum posts from the last decade of his life he just comes across as fussy and bitter like a lot of old dudes.
