Its a solid series with some ocassionally very awesome action choreography that the anime really brings to life, when its budgeted to do so. Plot wise, it begins falling off quite hard after the basement. The attack titan being capable of psychic time travel invites a ton of contrived plot points that the author did not navigate very well - and thats introduced along side all this global political intrigue that is a bit outside of the scope of the series. Still, there are some pretty cool moments action and plot wise after that.
I have a big gripe with the people that insist the ending is what ruined the series and I would point them to page related as the real moment the series lost me. This is the scene where Armin, the voice of reason for our story, is brought to tears by Zeke's Sterilization plan. This scene is exactly where I stepped back and said: I do not like this author's voice. On a moral level, I think depicting a plan to sterilize any ethnic group as a noble choice is absolutely fucking repulsive. On a narrative level, the fact that they're talking about sterilizing THEMSELVES and treating that as a good end goal is wildly dissonant and out of sync with the start of the series. This scene really caught me off guard and as I read the rest, I couldnt help but wonder if the success of the series changed the author's beliefs. We started out trapped in the walls with these kids and endured disappointment with them as we found out that the outside world isnt that great either, but this level of self destruction just comes completely out of left field to me and is really hard to reconcile with Armin's arc. I know him nuking a harbor is supposed to be the reason the plan appeals to him, but him doing that in the first place doesnt really make sense either.
