This kind of works on fuzzy cartoon shapeshifter logic. The color differentiations and the fact that you can still see suckers on his hands and the soles of his feet were directions from Sega so that nobody would be confused that the actual character was doing something bad or wrong. In that regard try to treat it as more of a visual shorthand and not necessarily something that is canon canon. It's a stretch but it's just one of those things that Ian has to work around. As for how would it look with characters like Shadow or Silver, maybe a dusty or gray shade on Silver and a lighter black on Shadow or a more orange tinged spine. No he can't take off accessories as it would be tearing off his own body and they wouldn't stay transformed if he did.
