I am a card carrying Perifag so I am sure that clouds my judgement on it somewhat but it felt like it understood what a trauma themed SU arc should be about more than most of Future. The gems helping Steven though the same sort of genuine friendship he showed to them in their times of need without any of the overly edgy Steven bullshit that plagued most of Future. The other gem themed episodes in Future were either awkward or were only good because they mostly ignored Steven's bullshit in favor of a plot centered around them like the Lapis episode.
