web novels/serial fiction can get away with a lot but I think this layering can help reduce meandering and maintain momentum/relevance

Perfect narrative won't save shit characters/dialogue/etc but how are you approaching story structure? I think it's a helpful tool at certain points of the writing process as long as you don't become a slave to it.
