Feudalism is great; you just have been poisoned by propaganda, since feudalism was the peak of human civilization and occurred in the Catholic Middle Ages.
Feudalism was characterized by subsidiarity: problems were handled at the most local level possible. Most problems would be solved by individuals, households, local leaders. Sometimes the nobility got involved, but only when the problem was unresolvable at the levels below them. And even then, there was a division of powers from petty nobles all the way up to kings and the emperor. People had a lot of freedom to act and, when kings finally started to be authoritarian, that actually signaled the END of the Middle Ages and the start of the modern era.
