I think part of the issue here is how IDW refuses to have these characters interact with the environment, which is antithetical to Sonic as a whole. The Zones in Sonic are like characters in themselves, bursting with gimmicks and set pieces to discover. Take Mirage Saloon from Mania. That shit has pinball totems, Samurai Pizza cat shotgun launchers, seltzer roads, spinning chairs, etc.

Meanwhile IDW has stuff like Rainbow Ravine, which IS cool on a base, conceptual level. But they just don't DO anything with it beyond being a basic backdrop for this issue's fight. Imagine if the mountains had stones imbedded in them that would shoot out solid rainbows that characters can run on if said stones were cracked. Or, I dunno, have like giant floating crystals that could teleport people to other crystal locations.

Like, these settings should have gimmicks the characters can exploit in these action scenes. It would go a long way in keeping the setting from feeling sterile and lifeless.
