I like to be blunt about things sometimes not because I'm lazy but because substantive explanations aren't my specialty. I also don't want to sound like I'm sucking off the author for rambling too long. But, I understand what you mean.

I like how before the fight even started you got a good feeling that whatever was in the magic forest, was possibly far more dangerous variants than the others variants up until that point. With the magic forest being turned into a slaughterhouse filled with dead fairies, It wasn't a subtle hint about what Marisa and Rem were about to face. With Marisa fighting and evading multiple gigantic variants, it quickly went from a fight to survive, to a flight to survive. Even though Sunny's death meant little to nothing, It made it clear just how truly gruesome these entities can be. Marisa having to use her Master Spark to flee was a good, clever touch. It showed how high the stakes really are here and even one fuck up could result in imminent death. The art is chicken scratch quality but It's charming. It still manages to capture the fearful emotions of the characters well, as well as show how how disturbing some of these creatures can look.

I'd say this one. obviously because this variant is retarded looking and this looks funny without context.

The ones from the marisa route specifically or the series itself? From what I've gathered so far, aside from Not-Reimu, the variants don't display any specific abilities that distinguish them from their counterparts. I could be wrong.
