2nd edition isn't a unmodifiable timecapsule or some refined hard core of purity; hell it's a mess. That's a big part of the charm, the kind of sexy mess that it is. The kind of crazy you can't help but want to stick a vortex grenade into.
But it's a game that was meant to be played with and built upon by designers that were creatives. So yeah, add to it. Use Citadel Journal army lists. Use those extra datafaxes that people have made for stuff. Make your own. Houserule some shit. Break something. Fix something. Get called a cunt by some grognard for having the gall to call out the shit bits of the system they tied their identity to as a child. Have a laugh.
