Basically at it's heart sotsu is attempting to create an origin story for the witches. That's why it feels so out of character. It's plot first, character last.

And the guy who's obsessed with this pairing is pretty new. He's been arguing for like a month now, but he has literally no arguments. When confronted with Lambda's existence he has no idea who she really was. Before him the yuri shit was pretty much not talked about cause it's just boring window dressing for the witches.
