Adding to this. It's not a coincidence that the chapter that starts by talking about darkners not being real is the same one to have a video game in the dark world.

There's an implication that dark worlds themselves can be thought of a video game. The darkners aren't real so it doesn't matter if you go through and kill them. No different to how you might think playing Mantle is justified in a pacifist run as well.
