Ironically, you're actually very close. Ronald Laren has one of the best caps exploits in the game. He will buy every Nuka-Cola Quantum you have in your inventory for 80 caps. With the Quantum Chemist perk, every 10 Nukas will be converted to 1 Quantum. If you maximize your Nuka collection, you'll be able to make several thousand caps. Even though you could sell the Nuka-Colas for more, it would be more efficient to sell vendors ammo since it's weightless. With the Scrounger perk, you should have too much ammo to sell, making bartering pointless outside of buying more Nuka-Cola.
So yes, Nuka-Cola is basically gold (in Fallout 3). The only catch is that he won't buy them for 80 caps forever. It's best to collect Nuka-Colas casually as you play and sell them to him when you're ready. For some reason, Ice Cold Nuka-Colas aren't affected by the Quantum Chemist perk, so I usually store my liquid gold in a locker.
