Something americans dont seem to know and even most mexicans is that the spanish on a literal, legal sense imported european feudalism into mexico. There was a county of orizaba, a duchy of Atrisco, and countless marquisades like Oaxaca or Acapulco. Within new spain there were kingdoms new Leon and mexico itself was a separate kingdom, and this aristocracy survived untill the revolution of 1912. The descendants of Moctezuma survived as a noble family both in mexico and spain itself but in contrast to peru most of the amerindian nobility was replaced with a spanish one
